Built By Jerry | VAM

Regular price $1,900.00 1225 grams

VAM: The VAM is my answer to requests for a lightweight road wheel. I used the modern shape of the MIDL but dropped the depth to 30mm. I call these "high volume" road wheels. No longer limited by rim brakes and 23mm tires or frames with clearance issues, I was able to open up the rim to 21mm internal and 28mm external for optimum tire fitment and aero benefits with a wider tire. Weight is impressive, the best I have seen in a high volume hooked rim at 1,200gr (DT 240) to 1,295gr (DT350). That is light! I offer these wheels in disc (stock) or rim brake (special order, please email me) configurations.

The road bike market is evolving quickly with a shift to much larger tires across the spectrum of applications, but particularly in high speed, paved road riding and racing. I pulled the best characteristics of my road and gravel wheels and came up with a quiver-killer wheel for the weight conscious road rider. The VAM is a optimized for use with 25mm to 30mm wide road tires with it's hooked beads allowing high pressure inflation (up to 120PSI). At 21mm internal, however, you can also put on your choice of gravel tires if you don't have a gravel specific wheelset.  If you are a fan of hilly terrain or are a smaller rider who is weight conscious on your bike builds, the VAM are a great alternative to the more aero minded MIDL.

For 2021, rims are now constructed using graphene doped Toray T800 carbon fiber. Graphene doping is a new process using wherein a very small amount of graphene (under 2%) is added to the carbon matrix during processing. Scientific testing has demonstrated significant increases in strength and impact resistance results from the graphene doping process. Our testing has shown this to be true in practice, allowing pretty significant weight reductions in the rim construction.

The VAM is 24 hole, laced in a 2-cross configuration front and rear using Sapim CX Ray aero spokes.

All wheels come tubeless taped with premium alloy valve stems installed, ready for you to mount tubeless tires. Through axles are not provided with wheels as they are part of the bike frame system.

Excellent wheels more excellent service

Unbelievably good. Quick, responsive emails. Turn around on the product within a week. After sale service and responsiveness. Trying to justify a new frame to warrant buying a new set of wheels!

A quick review

I learned of NEXT from my mechanic. He swore they were the “best wheels” so I looked into it. Jerry is super responsive. He texted me several times regarding various items such as upgrading the hubs to i9, asking about tires etc. the time between purchase and delivery was probably 10 days - for a hand built wheel I think that’s pretty darn good. The wheels are flawless. The build is great. The rider has put less than 500 miles on the set but the wheels complete the new bike - Bianchi Ininito CV Disc.

My Favorite Racing Set

The Quick wheel set has been my go-to for road racing and criteriums for the last few seasons. I've always been a fan of wheels that spin up fast and feel natural through corners. These wheels don't get blown around on the windy days and just feel right. I've raced them across the world, cobbles included, and never had any issues. They're awesome. If you're looking for a lightweight wheel set with some added aerodynamic benefits that won't drain your wallet look no further.

Exceptional wheels

While Jerry's technical expertise is the underpinning of most of his renown, what's really exceptional about the wheels he builds comes from his ability to match a rider to a wheel model. Jerry is every bit the wheel whispering character you'd expect from an engineer owning a one-man whee building l shop. Where that translates into small tweaks and additions - hub selection, spoke number - it means more than a customized set of wheels: the wheels I have are always true, always lively and they offer a type of balanced foundation to my bike that makes riding better. I can't recommend Jerry & NEXT highly enough.
