GCX: The GCX is my gravel and cyclocross racing wheelset. Based on the Rule, but lightened to a 310 gram rim (compared to 330gr for the ultralight Enve G23). I chose an asymmetrical profile front and rear, same as the Rule, and reduced the spoke count to 24. The internal width is 23mm and depth is 25mm. External width is 28mm.
For 2021, rims are now constructed using graphene doped Toray T800 carbon fiber. Graphene doping is a new process using wherein a very small amount of graphene (under 2%) is added to the carbon matrix during processing. Scientific testing has demonstrated significant increases in strength and impact resistance results from the graphene doping process. Our testing has shown this to be true in practice, allowing pretty significant weight reductions in the rim construction.
The GCX is an astonishingly light, great looking wheelset that remains very stiff laterally thanks to the improved bracing angle provided by the asymmetrical rim shape. The wheels ride lighter due to the significant reduction in rotating weight and the feel is noticeably snappy. High speed cornering as is common in American style cyclocross is excellent even with the ultralight weight due to the high, even tension build process and the improved spoke angle of the asymmetrical profile. Wheelset weights range from 1,260 grams (DT350) to 1,170 grams (DT240). This is unheard of in a dependable, race ready tubeless wheel.
All out performance compared to the Rule is improved in every regard, which was the design intent. So why still consider the Rule? The GCX rim requires compromises to achieve a no holds barred race wheelset. The Rule is 365 grams vs an incredibly light 310 grams and is laced 28H 3-cross vs 24H 2-cross for the GCX. The Rule is a very solid rim that builds into a dependable wheelset under 1400 grams that any size rider will get years of trouble free service from. Ride and feel is very similar to the GCX.
With the GCX everything is maximized or minimized or pushed harder to achieve the highest performing tubeless wheel possible. Just like a race prepped car verses an off the lot performance car, everything has been massaged and hand tuned with extreme care. That is the essence of a Built By Jerry wheel.
All wheels come tubeless taped with premium alloy valve stems installed, ready for you to mount tubeless tires. Through axles are not provided with wheels as they are part of the bike-frame system.
