XPLOR: My all-road specific rim (vs. pure gravel), the XPLOR is 40x30mm wide external with a 25mm internal width and a deeper hookless bead designed for better tire retention at higher pressure than a mountain bike style bead found on the gravel wheels. If you like all day rides on a wider road tire, or rolling gravel, or you want to do a fast group ride on a road slick as well as hit some rocky gravel with a 43mm casing, the XPLOR  does it all.

Very similar to the Enve AR 3.4, the XPLOR is aero optimized for 28-30 road tires at a width appropriate 70 PSI max inflation pressure (if you are determined to run 25mm tires at 90SPI, check out the MIDL). A 28mm slick will usually measure 30mm on the wide rim. The 25mm width is also great for a fat gravel tire from 35 to 45mm for maximum flotation and grip. At 1,400gr with tape and valves (DT240) or 1,430gr on I9, they are best in class weight. Up here in New England, a lot of our riding is hilly and in the Midwest it's really windy, so in our opinion the shallower, lighter wheels are the better balance for an all-roads wheel.

If you are looking for this same rim spec in a deeper version for "Aero Gravel" or just high volume road racing, check out the FAST HV.

Rims are constructed using graphene doped Toray T800 carbon fiber. Graphene doping is a process using wherein a very small amount of graphene (under 2%) is added to the carbon matrix during processing. My experience has shown this improves toughness, allowing pretty significant weight reductions in the rim construction.

The XPLOR is built in a 24 hole, 2-cross configuration. I have found 24 spokes to be the optimal set up for performance oriented riding up to about 190 pound rider weight for almost any use. For heavier riders or for more adventuresome exploring or bike packing durability, I also offer the XPLOR XL, which is a 28H version and can be built with a stiffer spoke like the Sapim CX Sprint for better flex management.

All wheels come tubeless taped with premium alloy valve stems installed, ready for you to mount tubeless tires. Through axles are not provided with wheels as they are part of the bike frame system.

XPLOR Wheelset

I mounted a pair of 30 mm Michelin Power Roads. The tires mounted easily and held air immediately with a bit of Stan’s sealant. My first few rides have been mostly road with a bit of gravel. They feel fast without any buffeting in cross winds.

Fabulous XPLOR

I've had my Firefly bike for about a year, so I felt it was time to submit a review of the XPLOR wheelset with DT Swiss 240s. The responsiveness and handling is exceptional, as is the comfort. Everything about this wheelset has been a delight. I highly recommend Jerry's wheelsets.

Fabulous Wheelset

I've had my Firefly for about a year now, so I wanted to add a review of the wheelset. XPLOR with DT Swiss 240s. I could not be happier with the responsiveness and comfort from this wheelset. I'm extremely satisfied with the purchase. I recommend Jerry's builds to everyone.

I love my XPLORs!

TL;DR: Buy some wheels from Jerry. I was going to wait until I’d had these wheels a year before reviewing them, but you know how time flies when you’re riding your bicycle. I got XPLOR wheels from Jerry for my 2015 Diverge in the fall of 2021, so they're 2.5 years old as I write this. I've been super happy with them. Partly this is just because they're so much better than what came on the bike. They're lighter, the Industry Nine Road Torch hubs and freehub are much nicer, and they're tubelessly plush (I weigh 175-ish lbs in riding clothes, and I'm running 30C Pirelli P Zero Race TLRs at low 60s psi on them at present). But mainly, they just seem SO well built. They're still completely true and I haven't even touched a spoke! The only maintenance they've needed in 10k miles was replacing the rear axle and freehub outboard bearings, which is perfectly reasonable because those two are the most exposed to the elements. I lucked into Jerry as a wheelbuilder. By 2021 I was wanting to go tubeless, so it was either new wheels or a new bike. The 2015 Diverge is an SCS bike, and when I started web-hunting for wheels Jerry was not only the one of the few that would build to that oddball rear geometry, he actually had an explanation (in a “Musings" article you can find on his website) of what SCS is. Since I really like the bike, and new wheels cost way less than new bikes, this made me totally happy! And then the wheels made me happier still! Also (bonus time), Jerry was really easy to work with and did a great job keeping me informed when some supply chain issues with the hubs cropped up (remember 2021?). Bottom line: have Jerry build you some wheels. You'll be glad you did!
